The accounts section contains a detailed history of all accounts (open and closed), your balance and your payment history associated with each account. You should be able to see month-by-month payment information for seven years of history. Each month will have a symbol next to it that indicates whether the account was paid as expected or if it was late.
As with any debt relief solution, there are pros and cons to debt consolidation. However, debt consolidation can be an attractive option for consumers looking to simplify their debt portfolio or buy more time to pay off their debts and take control of their finances. By paying off several debts with one new loan, you also alleviate the stress associated with having multiple creditors.

Get everything in writing. Before enrolling in a plan, make sure you get a contract. Get all verbal promises in writing, and read the contract very carefully to make sure the terms are the same as those you discussed. Watch very carefully for hidden fees. If a company won't send you a contract before you make your first monthly payment, don't pay them and go elsewhere for help.

Not every debt can qualify for this special method of debt relief. The best candidate for debt negotiation is an unsecured debt. An unsecured debt might be a medical bill, credit card debt or several other types of personal loans that are not backed with collateral or threat of legal action. Such debts are known as secured debts. They include car loans, home loans, child support bills and others.
If you have a poor credit history or a lack of credit history, a secured credit card may help you repair your credit and raise your credit scores. These require a deposit that generally serves as your credit limit. If you don’t pay your bills, the card issuer can withdraw the deposit. If you open one of these cards, it’s important to make on-time payments and keep an eye on your credit utilization.

As you can see from the table above, by consolidating the two credit cards into one lower-rate debt consolidation loan, you would pay off your debt eight months earlier, plus you’d also save $1,672 in interest. In this case, it could make sense to take advantage of debt consolidation, as long as you can commit to not using your old credit cards and charging up more debt while paying off the new loan.

Your credit score is a calculation of your credit risk and how well you use credit. Credit card companies use credit scores to determine creditworthiness. Many creditors use the FICO score. If you have good (670+) or very good (740+) credit, you will qualify for credit cards with better terms. With fair (669 or lower) or poor (579 or lower) credit, you may not qualify for the most attractive card terms. However, there are cards available for those with bad credit.
First off, let’s explore the concept of “debt consolidation” in a little more detail. If you have lots of debts and you’re finding it difficult to keep up with your payments, a debt consolidation loan allows you to merge them together into one monthly loan to lower your payments. Essentially, you’ll simply borrow enough money to pay off all of your existing debts, meaning that you’ll only owe money to one vendor. This can provide you with more breathing room with which to pay your debts, thereby keeping the debt collection process at bay.
Typically, the better collateral you can offer for a loan (banks call this security), the better interest rate you will get. If you use your home as security, you’ll likely qualify for the very best interest rate. If you can offer a newer vehicle as security, then you may also qualify, but the interest rate won’t be as low as if you offered real estate.
You can use the free analyzer which may have been provided to help you figure out which items are lowering your credit score. After reviewing your credit reports, print them off and then highlight everything you see as a negative listing along with what the computer analysis pointed out. If you downloaded these reports online, make sure to save copies of them somewhere on your computer. You are only able to access these reports for 30 days through the bureau websites, so you want to make sure you have both a printed and electronic copy.
Do you feel nervous just picking up your mail or answering your phone, because it might be the bank or the credit card company calling about your debt? You’re not alone. Obtaining relief from their debt is something many people struggle with. The problem is, when your debt load spirals out of your control, digging yourself out can be a major challenge.
For those looking for a debt relief loan, OneMain will lend money to those with lower credit ratings and no collateral. However, the cost seems to be a high interest rate and spotty customer service. This company appears strong and solvent, so it is a legitimate lending source. Our concerns cenetered around the cost associated with borrowing money from OneMain, and whether that would ultimately help or hinder customers efforts to improve their financial situation.

[4] Consumer price indexes measure changes in price for a set of consumer goods and services. The price indexes we surveyed include prices for apparel, education and communication, food and beverage, food at home, food away from home, housing, medical, other goods and services, recreation and transportation. According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, the price index of all items grew from 215.861 to 256.358 and the medical price index increased from 378.359 to 502.301 from September 2009 to September 2019. To compare the increase in the price index categories with income growth since 2009, we projected a 2019 median household income based on the rate of growth over the past 10 years. Based on census data, the median household income was $49,777 in 2009; our projections show a median household income of $64,875 for 2019.
Debt settlement may negatively affect your credit score, but not in all cases. In certain situations, there are ways to negotiate around the seven-year penalty you typically face for settling a debt. In normal circumstances, settling debt will create a negative item in your credit report that sticks around for seven years. When the clock starts depends on the status of the debt at the time of the settlement.
Thank you for this. I have been building my credit back after Economy struggles and long term illness.  Today, I'm in a better position physically and materially. Most of my credit issues are resolved. However, I'm curious as to your next step once you resolved the medical bill situation.  Did you pay the creditor and subsequently write a letter to the credit bureaus? I have a $284 medical bill I can't recall not paying, but I would like to resolve the matter this year.
This section is what makes standard credit dispute letters effective (whether using our template, someone else’s, or if you’re writing your own letter from scratch), not 609. If you’ve found inaccurate or incorrect information on your report, simply stick to a standard dispute template – and don’t worry about advertised quick fixes or special types of letters.
In a DMP, you deposit money each month with the credit counseling organization. It uses your deposits to pay your unsecured debts, like your credit card bills, student loans, and medical bills, according to a payment schedule the counselor develops with you and your creditors. Your creditors may agree to lower your interest rates or waive certain fees. But it’s a good idea to check with all your creditors to be sure they offer the concessions that a credit counseling organization describes to you. A successful DMP requires you to make regular, timely payments; it could take 48 months or more to complete your DMP. Ask the credit counselor to estimate how long it will take for you to complete the plan. You may have to agree not to apply for — or use — any additional credit while you’re participating in the plan.
There’s one more service that can give you earlier access to credit score changes, but only in a narrow set of circumstances. If you're applying for a mortgage loan, the lender may offer rapid rescoring, a service that will update your credit score within 48 to 72 hours. However, it doesn’t work for every situation. You need to have proof that there’s inaccurate information on your credit report, like a payment inaccurately reported as late. And you can only do this with certain mortgage lenders when you're trying to qualify for a mortgage or get better terms; it’s not a service available directly to consumers or with other types of businesses.

Tax man awaits. If you have debt forgiven, that probably will count as taxable income and should be reported on your federal income taxes. The lender who forgives the debt should send you a 1099-C tax form detailing how much the original debt was and how much was forgiven. For example, if you owed $25,000 and had $10,000 forgiven, you would have to claim the $10,000 as income on your taxes.
Negotiating a reduced amount may also be a possibility for medical bills that have gone to collections. At this point, you may be negotiating with the collection agency, rather than your health care provider, but they may be willing to agree to settle for less than what’s owed on a delinquent debt. Be aware, however, that allowing unpaid medical debts to go to collections can damage your credit score.
Loan approval is not guaranteed. Actual loan offers and loan amounts, terms and annual percentage rates ("APR") may vary based upon LendingPoint's proprietary scoring and underwriting system's review of your credit, financial condition, other factors, and supporting documents or information you provide. Origination or other fees from 0% to 6% may apply depending upon your state of residence. Upon LendingPoint's final underwriting approval to fund a loan, said funds are often sent via ACH the next non-holiday business day. LendingPoint makes loan offers from $2,000 to $25,000, at rates ranging from a low of 15.49% APR to a high of 35.99% APR, with terms from 24 to 48 months. The loan offer(s) shown reflect a 28 day payment cycle which is being offered as a courtesy as many of our customer are paid on a biweekly schedule and thus this may better align the loan payment dates with our customer's actual income receipt schedule. We also offer monthly and bi-monthly pay schedules.
Obtain an occupational license. The county and state where the credit repair business operates generally requires a credit repair business to have an occupational license. Contact the city or county licensing board to see if your city or county requires you to have this license. For a credit repair business, you typically have to obtain an occupational license as a financial services business.

Each consumer has different needs, and many lenders provide specialized loans designed to meet them. Experian Boost™ is another way for people with a poor or limited credit history to get ahead. Many times, these people will have a positive, consistent record of paying utilities on time, but those payments aren’t being included in their credit profile. Experian Boost™ allows people to include this payment history to their credit score. Best of all – it’s completely free.

On the other hand, if you do not have a lot of credit history or if you are new to the credit universe, being added to a credit account that belongs to someone else as an Authorized User may increase your credit score. This can be a great strategy for a newly minted workforce participant that has not had an opportunity to establish much of a credit history. Mom or dad or a trusting relative can add you as an Authorized User and all of the good that is attached to their credit account is automatically transferred to you. The age of when the account was opened, the timely payments and the prudent use of credit will all be added to your credit profile to help establish your newbie credit score.
Credit reporting is a business, not a law or the result of legislation empowering creditors and lenders to check up on you as a prospective customer or borrower. However, over several decades it has evolved into a formidable information bank... the standard "go to" for credit granters or creditors... which can greatly impact your financial well-being and success. The Federal Trade Commission (FTC), through the Fair Credit Reporting Act, has been empowered to monitor and oversee the conduct and practices of the credit reporting industry. So to some extent, the FTC is the mediator between you, the consumer, and the three major credit bureaus.

A low credit limit doesn't have to stop you from doing a balance transfer. You can transfer just one or two of your highest interest rate credit card balances to ease some of the debt pain. Before you consolidate debt with a balance transfer, make sure you’ll actually be saving money with the transfer. It's not worth it to consolidate debt and end up paying more.

Getting a personal loan from the P2P platform works differently than a traditional loan. LendingClub reviews an applicant’s credit history and income and grades them. Depending on your grade, you’ll qualify for a certain interest rate level based on your credit risk. Marketplace investors can choose who to lend money to, based on the borrower grade and interest rate.
DIY settlement does not involve a third-party firm representing you. It could involve a third-party representing the creditor. This “do it yourself” version is considered to be a less expensive form of debt settlement. It occurs when you negotiate directly with a creditor and they agree to consider your account paid for less than you owe. Creditor willingness to accept DIY settlement prior to charge-off is limited. DIY settlement following charge-off could involve a third-party representing the creditor, like a law firm, collection agency, or debt buyer. DIY settlement, while cheaper to the consumer, comes with all of the credit score damage of professional debt settlement. If you pursue DIY settlement, be sure to get the settlement agreement in writing before you pay the creditor a lump sum.

Just because you have a poor credit history doesn’t mean you can’t get credit. Creditors set their own standards, and not all look at your credit history the same way. Some may look only at recent years to evaluate you for credit, and they may give you credit if your bill-paying history has improved. It may be worthwhile to contact creditors informally to discuss their credit standards.

Ideally, you'll pay off your credit card bill in full at the end of every month. But if you can't, and you're currently carrying a balance, make a plan to pause using your cards and pay down credit card debt. You may want to send extra money to the highest-interest card first, known as the debt avalanche method, which will save the most money in interest. Or you can pay off small balances using the debt snowball method, which may motivate you more.
The key here is changing your habits. What you don’t want to do is consolidate your debt and then go right back to racking up high balances. Before making any change, you may want to consult with a financial planner to help you get your monthly spending in the black, or contact an organization such as the National Federation for Credit Counseling, a non-profit organization that provides financial education to millions of consumers every year, with services that include debt and bankruptcy counseling.
Bankruptcy is one way to clear up your debt, however, it is not your best option. Often with bankruptcy, you still have to pay off a portion of the debt, and it impacts your credit score drastically. It may seem like the easiest solution, but student loan debt is rarely discharged, and it will affect your ability to qualify for a mortgage in the future. If you find yourself in a situation where you do not see a way out, you will need to go through credit counseling before you will qualify for bankruptcy. You need to completely stop using your credit cards, and you should speak to a lawyer. However, this may not be the solution that you are hoping for. If at all possible you should pay off the debts yourself.
Nearly 50% of all college graduates leave school with private or federal loans, and the average US student leaves with at least $10,000 to repay. This can be a substantial burden for recent graduates, which makes student loan consolidation a smart - and sometimes necessary - choice for any graduate in need of debt help. Consolidation of federal loans is easy, and might save you hundreds of dollars by lowering your interest rate. Read our guide to federal and private student loans, browse our articles on the topic.
If you do decide to consolidate your credit card debt using a loan, it’s important to choose the right company to work with. You don’t want to end up with a bigger problem than you had before. Because those looking for credit card consolidation are often quite desperate, there are plenty of predators operating in the space. You need to be careful to make sure you work with a company that has your best interests at heart.
This can be particularly true if your credit history or current accounts are limited, either due to still building credit or going through bankruptcy. One way to add to your credit mix is to open a new credit card, which can be difficult — but isn’t impossible — to manage when trying to fix your credit. Our top-rated credit cards for bad credit offer flexible requirements and will report to all three credit bureaus.

The credit cards with the richest rewards, plushest perks, lowest interest rates and longest 0% periods are available only to those with good to excellent credit. If you're still building your credit (or rebuilding it after a misstep), you'll want to hold off on applying for these cards until your score improves. However, banks have designed cards specifically for people working to improve their credit. Getting one of these cards and using it responsibly can go a long way toward your goals:

To illustrate: If you transfer $2,000 from three different cards to a single card with a $10,000 limit, and then close the three original card accounts, you’ll end up with a $6,000 balance on the one new card. This exceeds the recommended maximum of 30 percent of the credit limit, which in this case is $3,000. However, if you keep those original three accounts open—while ceasing to use them—you would have a $6,000 balance on $40,000 of available credit (assuming all accounts have $10,000 limits). This gives you a much lower credit utilization ratio. Also, remember that long-standing accounts with positive payment histories favorably affect your credit score, even if you no longer use those cards.
I was referred to Debthelper.com by Accredited Debt Relief as I did not have enough debt to qualify for their program. Counselor was initially very responsive, but has not responded to me for about 2 weeks now. They mispelled my name on their service agreement and I asked for it to be corrected and resent before I signed it. And here I sit and wait. I was also concerned by lots of spelling and gramatical errors in their online debt education course. Normally this is an indicator of a "fly by night" organization or a scam. I then checked them against the BBB, where they have an A+ rating, and googled reviews, which were glowing. Maybe I just got helped by the wrong counselor? And maybe their proofreading department that handled the preparation of their online debt education course was still asleep when they reviewed the course. At any rate, I am now leary of this company. I would like to get started with their program, but I am not going to sign a document with another persons name on it. I WOULD be a paying customer, but the ball is in their court......
they would not work with me the Bill was to a Doctor who I never seen he was part of a group for my sleep problems I stop breathing in the middle of night 30 times I have Had 2 strokes and a lot of Mimi strokes the bill to him to decide how much air I needed. Bill $435 dollars never mind the 2530.00 for the 11 hrs. there. after insurance I owed him 268.00 and the other 500.00 because of my deductible they work with me they wanted 100.00 a moth to pay him and other Medical bills I was still paying on. I said I could pay 50.00 a Mo and as soon as one of my other bills of 30.00 a moth was paid off I would add it to the one I owed 500.00 then I call the doctors office said I could only pay 50.00 and that was going to be a tight for me they also wanted 100.00 a Mo they finally after 2 weeks and 10 phone calls from me they agreed. I made 2 payments on time to him which made it 168.00 I had another stroke did not make that payment that Mo because in Hospital. sometimes it takes a week or so to get your mind working on all the things you need to think about they sent no letter saying your payment is past due please call or we have tried to reach you .I called them and said I would not get the payment to them on time it would be a week late and was told that 4 days after they did not get my payment they turned it into collection . I explained what had happened and that the place I had owed 500.00 to said don’t worry about the payment you missed nor the one coming up this mouth .stat next Mo with you regular 50.00 payment well this help you get on you feet some I said yes and thanked them very much for being so understanding. I told the Doctors office that had they had waited I could have given them 100.00 that mo. So not all places work for you or with you they would have gotten there money.in Full . like I promised. In my Book places who work with me get top of list when paying the back as soon as possible.
Pros: A credit counseling organization may work with your creditors to set up a debt-management plan on your behalf, which requires you to make a single monthly payment to the credit counseling organization each month. The organization then uses the money you provide to pay your creditors. Your credit counselor may also work with your creditors to negotiate lower interest rates or waive certain fees.

If you take these steps and still find yourself struggling, getting help may allow you to get back on track. An approved credit counseling agency can help you create a plan to better manage your finances and pay down debt. You can find a state-by-state list of approved credit counseling agencies from the U.S. Department of Justice to make sure you're working with a legitimate agency.
The agency may delete the information from your file without you having to do anything else. But if the incorrect information remains, you’ll have to take the next step and dispute it with the credit reporting agency again. On the dispute form, clearly point out that the information can’t be verified by you or the credit reporting agency, so it needs to be removed. This should do the trick.

One of the quick credit repair tactics to consider first is seeing if you can increase the credit limits on your current accounts. And this is just a matter of reaching out to your credit card companies and requesting a credit limit increase. According to FICO, 30% of your credit score is tied to the amount owed on your credit accounts. A primary way they evaluate this is something called your credit utilization ratio. The ratio is simply a matter of how much you owe vs your credit limits.

It doesn’t cost anything to dispute mistakes or outdated items on your credit report. Debt settlement sounds like a sexy option to consolidate debt. Who wouldn’t want to pay half (or less!) of what you owe on credit card debt? But this is considered a desperation measure for a reason. The ads boasting that settlement companies like National Debt Relief can get at least 50% of your debt forgiven, don’t tell the whole story. That figure doesn’t include the fees you will pay for the service; the late penalties you incur while settlement negotiations take place; and whether a creditor will even accept the offers made. The results from this form of debt consolidation definitely are mixed. Do all the math before you choose this option. It should be noted that attorneys also offer debt settlement in addition to companies like National Debt Relief.

In April 2018, the average FICO® Score in the U.S. was 704, which is a good score.1 Comparatively the average VantageScore 3.0 score in 2017 was 675.2 And even though average credit scores are in the good or almost good range, they vary by age, state and other factors. So, there are still plenty of us with lower than desired scores and plenty of room for fixing credit issues. While fixing credit doesn’t happen overnight, there are steps we can take right now to get the process started.

Debt consolidation is a good option for finding some relief from creditors that shouldn't hurt your credit scores if you manage it responsibly. If you end up consolidating your debt with a new loan or credit card, chances are you'll incur a hard inquiry as a result of letting a new lender check your credit for your application. Hard inquiries can ding your credit scores, but the impact is typically small and short-lived. Also be sure to make all your payments on time, as payment history is the most important aspect of your credit scores; even one late or missed payment can bring your score down. And try not to apply for any new credit cards while you work to pay off your current debt.

Lending Club, the largest peer-to-peer lender, offers loans up to $35,000 to borrowers with credit scores of 600 and higher. Its interest rates generally are competitive and fixed, resulting in fixed monthly payments. Pay it off ahead of time? No problem; Lending Club assesses no prepayment penalties or fees. Downsides: Not available in Iowa, and when you pay by check (rather than electronic transfer, for instance), you’re dinged a $7 processing fee.
Thank you. I thought my scores were better than they are and I contacted a mortgage lender who said my scores were much lower than I thought. He said to pay off all negative open accounts. Most are medical bills. He also said that even with a car loan and a secured card and Fingerhut it is not enough trade lines. He suggested I open another secured card. Use one for gas and the other for fun/groceries. He said charge no more than 30% on each only if there is the money present to pay it off when I get home that day. If so, pay all but $5 immediately. He said that plus the debt should help within a few months to raise my score in addition to keeping the existing items current. My husband has a tax lien so I promptly made arrangements for that and have applied for and was approved for a second secured card as well. I just have to wait until payday to fund it and then will work to pay off these debts and build my score. Hoping for some big results in six months.
It is recommended that consumers check their credit report periodically in order to maintain the accuracy of the content and to prevent them from being a victim of identity theft. Each year, you are entitled to receive a free copy of your credit report from each of the three credit reporting agencies, including Equifax, TransUnion and Experian. If you enroll in a debt consolidation or debt settlement program, it's a good idea to check your credit report prior to enrollment and then again after six months. When you compare the two timeframes, you will likely see a great improvement as creditors begin to receive their payments and update your credit reports accordingly. If any of the information is inaccurate, you can file a dispute with the credit reporting agency and get the corrected version updated in a short amount of time.

For those who aren’t able — or inclined — to see a financial services professional, there’s still plenty of hope. You can do a lot to fix a floundering credit score, especially if you have the dedication and discipline to stick to your credit improvement plan and build better financial habits. In the article that follows, we’ll take a look at how to go about doing this was some valuable tips, including familiarizing yourself with how credit scores work, rebuilding your credit on your own, and how to seek professional help.
Personal loans used to consolidate credit card debt are another way of turning multiple balances into a single monthly payment. These loans, which don’t require collateral, are available through banks, credit unions and a variety of online lenders. They give those with less than sterling credit scores a chance to convert revolving debt into a fixed monthly payment at somewhat lower interest rates.
If your debt load is small - you can pay it off within six months to a year – and you’d save only a negligible amount by consolidating, don’t bother. Instead, try a do-it-yourself payoff method such as the debt snowball (a method of debt repayment in which the debtor lists each of his/her debts from smallest to largest (not including the mortgage), then devotes extra money each month to paying off the smallest debt first while making only minimum monthly payments on all of the other debts) or debt avalanche (a type of accelerated debt repayment plan. Essentially, a debtor allocates enough money to make the minimum payment on each source of debt, then devotes any remaining repayment funds to the debt with the highest interest rate).
Your income. Lenders may require a minimum annual income and will consider your debt-to-income ratio. A debt-to-income ratio is the percentage of your gross monthly income that goes toward paying your debts. A lower ratio is better because it shows that you don’t spend too much of your income paying debts. Some debt consolidation loan companies allow debt-to-income ratios as high as 50%, meaning your monthly debt obligations should add up to no more than half of your gross monthly income.
With the exception of your spouse, other family members will not inherit your debt after your death. The exceptions, of course, are those family members who co-signed or applied for credit together with you. In this case, the surviving parties will have to take responsibility for what is owed. Some people set up life insurance policies to take care of any unpaid debts in the event of their death. Speak to a professional about what options are available to you.
The AARP calculator allows you to input a number of data points to help you see how different debt amounts, interest rates and loan terms will affect what it will take and how long it will take to get out of debt with a debt consolidation loan. This calculator also shows you, using a bar graph, the difference in what your monthly payments will be with and without debt consolidation.
The Capital One® Secured Mastercard® is another option for those who want to strengthen their credit score. This card offers a potentially lower minimum security deposit than other cards, starting as low as $49. Be aware the lower deposit is not guaranteed and you may be required to deposit $99 or $200. You can deposit more before your account opens and get a maximum credit limit of $1,000. There is a feature that will assist your transition from a secured to an unsecured card. Capital One automatically reviews your account for on time payments and will inform you if you’re eligible for an upgrade. However, there is no set time period when they will review your account — it depends on several credit activities. If you receive notification that you’re eligible, you will be refunded your security deposit and will receive an unsecured card.

Of course, anytime you intend to apply for new credit you should carefully consider the potential impacts of a new hard inquiry to your credit reports and scores. If your score is already suffering from other credit damage, adding too many hard inquiries to the pile can do more harm than the new credit card may do good — especially if you’re denied.
A credit repair company can boost your credit score instantly by removing negative items from your credit report. However, many people find them expensive to use. Credit Monkey works differently. Your license may cause a conflict of interest with mortgage brokers, BUT creating a service outside of your company could be advantageous. Credit challenged individuals hurt many sales for most of these services mentioned. Also, many brokers and others get direct leads from dealing with those with credit problems in their normal business environment. Why not channel these individuals to your own credit repair business or one you are affiliated with, for an additional profit center? It’s just smart business.

Also consider debt consolidation, which involves getting a debt consolidation loan or a 0% APR credit card that lets you pay off your debts at a lower rate, at least at first. Finally, consider reaching out to a credit counseling agency that can help you design a plan to pay down debt and change your lifestyle so you can avoid racking up more debt in the future.Advertisement
Transferring high-interest credit card debt to lower-interest cards is a good idea when your credit score is good enough to qualify for low to no interest introductory offer cards. This method is also advantageous if you know that you can make major headway toward paying off your debt during the introductory, low-interest period. If you’re going to use the new card to run up more credit card debt, then don’t bother with this.
Many people have found that a good way to get debt relief is by earning more money and using it to pay off their debts. These people get second jobs or part-time jobs to generate extra income. People with normal 9 AM to 5 PM jobs could take a second job evenings or weekends. I ran into my personal banker several weeks ago tending bar at a local restaurant. In his case, it was to help his wife finish college but the extra money he earned could just as well have been used to retire the couple’s debts.
Another thing that you should not do – at least if you do not have to –is filing for bankruptcy. There are instances where declaring that you are broke would be your only way out of debt. However, even filing for bankruptcy will not relieve you of all your debt obligations. The most popular type of bankruptcy for people overcome with debt is called a chapter 7. It will wipe out credit card debts and other types of unsecured debts including medical expenses, personal loans, installment loans, department store credit cards, gas cards, cell phone bills and veterinarian bills in excess of $500. However, it will not discharge or eliminate secured debts including your mortgage or automobile loan as well as child support, back taxes, spousal support, NSF (not sufficient funds) checks, car repair bills and insurance policies.

For example, let’s say you owe $3,000 on three accounts. You open a balance transfer card that offers 0% APR for 12 months with a fee of $3 per transfer. You’d pay $9 to transfer the three balances, giving you a total balance of $3,009. To pay that balance off during the introductory period, you’d need to make payments of at least $250.75 per month.
Clearly, this can become a sticky situation. If your target co-signer is willing, then suggest a face-to-face discussion about the rules. Decide how much you'll spend on the card each month, what payment reminders you plan to set up and what happens if you default on the account. And keep in mind that not all of the major issuers allow co-signers, so do your research before the meeting.
A: If you’re able to lower your rates or your payments by consolidating, you may be able to pay more of your balance each month, which can be one good way to improve your credit. But it’s important to know that opening a new credit card account to transfer a balance does create a “hard inquiry” on your credit report, which might lower your score a little. Consider talking to a qualified professional about your options.

Non-payment: If the company asks you to stop making payments to your creditors — or if the program relies on you to not make payments — it must tell you about the possible negative consequences of your action, including damage to your credit report and credit score; that your creditors may sue you or continue with the collections process; and that your credit card companies may charge you additional fees and interest, which will increase the amount you owe.
